Two fires in 12 hours reported for Manistee 60 years ago

The Manistee Boxing Club was visited recently by Brett Lally, a pro boxer out of the Michigan Boxing Club. Lally fights at 139 pounds and has a record of 7-0 with five knock-outs. 

With their first victory of the season, the Brethren Bobcats hope to have a successful homecoming game Friday night with Glen Lake. The varsity team is made up of: Steve Bulerski, Mike Maier, Kent Karash, Eric Asiala, Troy Murphy, Rob Lewis, Willie McCurdy, Al Bulerski, Marty Miller, Daryl Howes, Kirk Miller, Ron Miller, Jim Frizzell, Tim Soper, Jack Schafer, Pat Smith, Scott Engwall, Jeff Lagerquist, Eric Somsel, Jim Bushway, Duane Gents and Trent Garber. The team is coached by Mark Eckhardt, Paul Witt, and Jim LaPage. 

City firefighters were called out twice in a 12-hour period last night and early this morning. A fire in a television set belonging to Walter Scott at 301 Cypress St. was reported at 6:56 p.m. The inside of the set was burned out and some smoke damage was done inside the home. At 5 a.m. firefighters were called to an apartment at the Highway Inn at 715 Kosciusko St. owned by Sally Fewtz, where there was an overheated oil heater. No damage was done and the firefighters returned at 5:15 a.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd M. Evans have submitted their resignations as caretaker and matron at the Manistee County Infirmary and Hospital, it was announced today. The new caretaker and matron will be Mr. and Mrs. Edward Anderson, of Onekama. In their letter of resignation Mr. and Mrs. Evans expressed the pleasure they had derived in working with the board for the last 16 years.

“Casey” Polisky, one of the owners of the local Salt City Beverage Company, is in the Navy, stationed at Key West, Florida. Today his partner in the business, Roland Langworthy, said he was going to make certain the firm did its share to provide “Casey” with the weapons to fight the Nazis by turning in one of the company’s old trucks as scrap in the city’s salvage drive tomorrow. The truck should add roughly two tons of metal to the city’s scrap pile.
